Inclusive Navigation for GSU

This project embraces a community-centered approach to design an inclusive navigation system for disabled students and staff, particularly wheelchair users, at Georgia State University (GSU). Inspired by an MFA candidate with multiple sclerosis, the project identified barriers such as unclear signage, inaccessible pathways, and inefficient processes that hinder mobility and independence.

Process and Insights

Through four interviews with disabled students and two rounds of user testing, I gained valuable insights into their daily challenges. By building trust and collaborating closely, we transformed their experiences into actionable solutions, refining the design through survey feedback and iterative testing.

Impact

Post-testing revealed a 47% improvement in navigation for disabled users, demonstrating the power of user-centered design. This project highlights how empathy, collaboration, and thoughtful design can transform accessibility into independence and empowerment.

Challenges

Accessibility Awareness: Identifying the specific needs of wheelchair users through interviews and observations.

Visual Cohesion: Ensuring the new signage system aligns with GSU’s existing design while meeting accessibility standards.

Technical Integration: Collaborating on the digital app to incorporate real-time mapping features.

User Testing: Refining color contrasts, typography, and layouts based on feedback from iterative testing.

Solutions

The proposal integrates physical and digital design elements to address  accessibility challenges:

Updated Signage: High-contrast, color-coded signs and pathways for clear navigation.

Digital Enhancements: QR codes on signs and interactive maps in the GSU Wayfinding App guide users to accessible routes and facilities.

Community Platform: A space for students to share accessibility tips and resources.

My Role

As the project’s graphic designer, I led the development of the visual identity for the wayfinding system, including signage, maps, and app interfaces. I conducted interviews with students to understand their challenges and collaborated with the team to create inclusive solutions. As the creative director for the new system, I ensured all visuals met ADA regulations, reflected GSU’s branding, and were user-friendly.
